Auch, prefecture and monumental staircase
Auch, prefecture of the Gers, climbs via its famous monumental staircase of 234 steps, linking the Gers river to Sainte-Marie Cathedral and its celebrated Armagnac Tower. The statue of D’Artagnan, the illustrious Gascon, stands halfway up. At the top, the narrow and steep pousterle lanes open onto small squares where you readily share a glass of floc on a terrace.
Lectoure, Condom and the Baïse valley
Lectoure, perched on a plateau, offers a vast view over the Pyrenees from its Bastion walk. Its cathedral and mansions tell a rich story. In Condom, historic capital of Armagnac, the Baïse quays liven up in summer. Flaran Abbey, one of the best-preserved Cistercian monasteries in southwest France, offers exhibitions and gardens for a cultural afternoon together.
The most beautiful villages of the Gers
Larressingle, a miniature fortified town, Fourcès with its unique round square, Montréal-du-Gers and its royal bastide: the department has some of the most beautiful villages in France. Gascon markets, corner cafés and terraces under plane trees shape a generous daily life. On Lyad, Gers members share their favourite villages and tables: it is up to you to find someone to push the next wooden door with.
